Directions/Guide to the Gunks
DIRECTIONS
The Shawangunks (aka Gunks) are located just outside of New Paltz, NY which is right off the NY State Thruway (I-87). If you are located in Providence or south both MapQuest and Google Maps recommend that you go via I-95 south and if you are north of Providence you should go via I-90. I have included maps for each below.

Southern Route: I-95 south to CT-9 north to RT 66 west to RT 691 west to I-84 west to I-87 north |
Northern Route: RT 146 north to I-90 west to I-87 south |
DIRECTIONS TO THE RENTAL HOUSE FROM NEW PALTZ.
- Go straight through town on RT 299 toward cliffs.
- You will eventually come to an intersection where you have to turn right or left. The Brauhaus restaurant will be on your left and the Mountain Bistro deli in front of you. This is RT 55/44. Go left.
- After a few miles take a right on RT 7. Lombardi’s restaurant is at the intersection.
- After a few miles take a right on Tilson Lake Road. This turns into Decker Road.
- After 1.8 miles there is a driveway in a field on your left. It has a blue lantern hanging from a tree. The number 445 is on the mailbox.. You can not see the house from the road. It is very hard to find so look carefully. If you come to a pond you’ve gone too far.
MEETING PLACE
We meet at the Wawarsing (AKA "stairmaster") parking lot at 7:30 each morning.

Note: The hostel offers community-style lodging for $30 a night per person. It has a full service kitchen and living room with games and a library. The hostel is a smoke-free/alcohol free environment and guests must return by midnight when they lock the doors. Reservations are advised especially for weekend stays.

NY State DEC Multi-Use Area (AKA Multi-Abuse Area)
This area is located on Route 299 just 1/2 mile from Rte 44/55 in Gardiner. It
is free to camp here however there are no amenities or reservations. So if you are
thinking of visiting during one on the busy seasons it is best to get here
early. For more info and regulations about this area please contact the
Department of Environmental Conservation at the address below. Note:
If you pitch a tent outside the marked areas you will be arrested. If you
go outside your tent at night watch where you step human excrement is common as
there are no facilities.

Trapps Camp (AKA Camp Slime)
This camping is located in the Mohonk Preserve near the steel bridge. Its
features include a short walk to the port-a john and a short jog to the spring
at the Uberfall. Please contact the Mohonk Preserve for more info. Note: The
nickname says it all.
